The art always appears in places you least expect. Maybe it is just a game of hide and seek? I found a hidden staircase leading to a locked door in our apartment. Naoise found me hiding under the bed and when I got up my clothes were caked in dust. The under side of the bed has not been touched in a long time.

We are the art. Me and Naoise. We are the subject. You can find us in Takahuhti. We are here. We breath We move. We look after each other. We are a temporary performance negotiating this place and time.

Sometimes we struggle. Sometimes we feel at home. Naoise told me that he likes this house it is calm and quiet and peaceful. If he had to live here he would do so happily.

Naoise is sleeping while I write this. We can not always be making together. There at least has to be a record. A document. Some evidence. I cannot rest……but as the days speed past I feel more relaxed. I am occupying this space I AM PRESENT.

We are all just passing through, moving on, tracing a line.

I have not stepped out in the dark yet. I am always inside when the night falls.

A virtual breakfast via Skype helped to get Naoise off to school. We missed the bus that we had aimed to be catching. I excepted that we would be late and just hoped that the teacher would be kind and understanding and thankfully she was.

We arrived to building caos, as the school was undergoing some refurbishment work. There was no reception, no security, we just walked in. There was no fear. There is less anxiety here. There are no child snatchers, or boggy men or wrong doers waiting to get inside. Only an open door.

The welcome is warm. The children all smile and smile and want Naoise to sit with them. I am delighted and have to hold back the tears. It was the love and company of children that Naoise has been wanting for.

I cannot be everything for him. He needs others…..other children. They are his real playmates, not me, they really understand. I have been a child, I crave to return to that childish place. I glimpse it. Sometimes I inhabit it for brief moments. Then I have to be adult again. I have to be adult for him.

The teacher is reserved, strict, a reassured and calm voice. Occasionally she rings a bell to get the children’s attention when the class becomes noisy. The lesson is art. The children are painting an autumn scene of birth trees shedding autumn leaves. The art lesson is ordered and structured but there is space for creativity within. The children paint with watercolours.

I help with brushes and cups and palettes and encouragement. Naoise paints a picture of himself. He is happy. At playtime he rushes out with the other children, How at home he is here. Naoise loves school.

It is one of the children’s birthdays so the class sing to her. Happy Birthday in Finnish, Russian, German, Chinese…..I think. The children all get a chocolate banana to celebrate her birthday. I had hoped for one, but there are not enough, I imagine what the fake banana tastes like.

The teacher prayed the children, she tells them that although the pictures have all been made in the same way each and everyone of them is different.

Lunch is around eleven. The school day is much shorter in Finland. The teacher sits with her class at lunch. Even at lunch she presides over her tribe of children, ordering, looking after, making sure all is ok. I like that she eats lunch with them, I think that there is much to be learnt from informal daily social rituals.

Naoise eats fish finger and I munch my way through the sandwiches that I made.

I ask questions, somethings I already know. Formal education begins at 7. Despite what I have read she tells me that there is homework. Teachers are all educated to MA level. Pay is about the same as in the UK but the school day is shorter. As a profession teaching is valued. All education in Finland is free, including to university level. At this school children have to pass an entrance exam, but it is free to attend the school. There are 24 children in her class all with varying degrees of verbal and written language skills. There is no teaching assistant. At the school there are children from about 40 different countries.

Due to the building work last week they had to spend one whole day out of the class. I asked what is it that she did with the children. They went to the beach and through rocks in the lake, then they went to the playground.

PLAY. PLAY. PLAY. Have we forgotten how to PLAY. I hate all the testing and measuring that goes on in Naoise school. PLAY and OUTSIDE and CREATIVITY needs to be put back on the curriculum as the most important thing not TEST.

During the Finnish lesson Naosie becomes bored and twirls around and around on his seat. I ask if he wants to draw, but he settles on a game of noughts and crosses and then hangman. We cannot follow the Finnish lesson, and we haven’t been given a work book to attempt it. At the end of the lesson, the teacher asks the children if they want to teach Naosie some essential words in Finnish. This is lots of fun and they teach Naoise:

Moi- Hello (child same age)

Hei- Hello (polite)

Kiitos- Thankyou

Ole hyvä-Your welcome

Hei hei- Hei hei

Anteeksi- Sorry

Vessa- Toilet

Pelata- Play

It is one and it is time to go home. The children all say goodbye and ask if Naoise is coming to school again. I wish he was. I wonder if it is possible for a child to attend this school for a short period of time. Its not a question that I feel I can ask during my visit, but maybe one for a follow up email. I think that if an artist was to have a prolonged period of time undertaking a residency at Takahuhti, then they would need childcare provision. I was so impressed with the school, I wouldn’t think twice about sending Naoise to it. I was impressed by how happy and content the children seemed, and in the class they were focussed on what they were doing and happy to learn. The teaching was excellent.

Naoise was very tired after the school visit, but he was glad that we managed to go to this school. He described the child that he had been playing with as inquisitive. All Naosie wanted to do was go home. Then he sat on a step and refused to budge and said he wanted to go home and he was fed up of Finland. I explained to him that we could’nt go home for another week yet. I was kind, I was empathetic, I tried to jolly him along. He just sat on the step. So I let him sit on the step and rest a while in the sun.

I rang my mum. My mum does not always have the answers, but I like to hear her voice as it settles me down. She listens. She probably tires of the calls and the having to listen. But I need her. I might be all grown up but I still need her.

Whilst on the phone I find a little two spot lady bird and put it in Naoise hand for him to play with.

My mum is tired, she says she will rest when she is back at home in Scotland.

Naoise has forgotten why he was being stubborn as he loves the ladybird so so much. We take the ladybird with us to the art gallery. Naosie show the ladybird the paintings, but then she flies off up onto the window blind. Naosie sits on a chair and waits to see if she will fly back down again. He is sad that she does not want to sit on his hand anymore. Eventually Naoise looks at the paintings with me and he points out many details that I haven’t thought to notice myself.

Upon leaving we hope the ladybird finds its way to the outside too.

Naoise wants to go home. I don’t want to go home. I want to enjoy the city. See what we can see. We go to the library again, where as well as books there is a cafe. I buy an ice-cream for me and Naosie. There are some unusual flavours, liquorice, pear…..Naosie chooses Mango and I have raspberry and blueberry……I thought that the ice-cream would be a magic moment, but Naoise licks his twice and decides he does not like it, so i give him mine and he does not like that either. Oh dear. Oh dear how hard I try. Never mind we find books instead. He looks at a chemistry book and I marvel over Maurice Sendak.

Later back at home, after tea, we are invited out to the park with the mother and her family from upstairs. I am so thrilled. An ordinary trip to the park, some company for me and Naosie. The children run along the path. Naoise babbles away to the children in English. Actually you dont really need a common language to play together. To climb, to jump, to enjoy.

I am so so happy sitting on the bench and talking.
