In September 2016, Helen and Naoise will be spending two weeks participating in an artists research residence at Takahuhti Artcenter, Tampere, Finland. M(other) and Son, is a collaboration between two artists Helen Sargeant and her youngest son Naoise Sargeant supported through Nicola Smiths’ We Are Resident project. This site will used to document their residency.
This residency is important to me as it will be the first time in 14 years, since becoming a mother that I have been able to access an international arts opportunity.
Helen’s aim is to take a child centred approach to researching and making. To dedicate a prolonged period to time to caring, playing and creating. To experience and negotiate Finland and its culture with her son and empower his creativity by making him an equal collaborative partner.
Helen and Naoise enjoy drawing, cooking, making, writing, taking photographs and performing together. They intend to split their time during the residency between the live/work space at Takahunti and by taking day trips out to explore Tampere, its people and institutions.
Helen intends to make two portable studios for her and Naoise in the form of rucksacks; each containing drawing, art making materials and equipment such as a sketch pad, smart phone, string, chalk etc, so that they can create whilst on the move.
During their time in Finland Helen and Naoise are planning to:
- Share their creative outputs via this blog site.
- Present a parent/child talk about their work at the Mältinranta Artcente in Tampere.
- Visit a local school
- Learn how to bake reikäyeipä bread with a Finnish family.
After the residency Helen together with consultation with Naoise is planning to:
- Design a limited edition booklet/leaflet about their child/mother residency to be produced and distributed to art galleries and organisations in Tampere and Manchester.
